I’m fairly accustomed to awkward moments. I’m one of those people who always go and put my foot right in it, or says something completely inappropriate, aka awkward, without intending to.
Like that time I saw a friend of ours and immediately asked in a very upbeat nonchalant kinda way
“Hey so and so where is your girlfriend so and so”
Only to be met with the response
“We broke up last week”
But sometimes the awkward turtle just doesn’t cut. Things can get so awkward your only option is to go onto all fours and bark like a dog to ease the awkwardness. Yes I have done that too. Not my proudest moment. #AwkwardDog
So if like me you find yourself in numerous awkward situations on a regular basis I suggest you familiarize yourself with some of the urban dictionary’s awkward idioms. That’s idioms, not idiots.
Here are some of under5foot’s all-time favorite awkward-isms
The one that started it all. During an awkward moment, this hand gesture is used to mark the situation as awkward, and, depending on the situation, makes it more awkward or clears the air.
The awkward turtle is made by putting one hand on top of the other with the thumbs sticking outward and rotating forward. The speed of the rotating thumbs depends on the degree of awkwardness.
The Awkward Jellyfish
Only one hand is needed to do the awkward jellyfish. Open your hand face down, then, mimic a jellyfish swimming, moving your hand upward as it closes.

In an awkward situation one will point their pinky and index fingers down while the other two fingers are held up by the thumb. Another person near you will then put one hand on each of your two fingers and slide them down. The more times this motion is repeated and its speed is determined by how awkward the situation is.
The Awkward Starfish
Level 5 in the “Levels of Awkward”. awkward starfish refers to an awkward experience where it takes a minute for the awkwardness to sink in…then all of a sudden, it smacks you RIGHT in the face.
The result when one person tries to give another a high-5, but the other person tries to give a fist bump. Once these two hand gestures meet, they form a turkey at a really awkward moment.
